St. John Paul II is excited to announce the promotion of Mr. Jonas Angeles!

Since 2019, St. John Paul II has offered Varsity Boys Basketball. Today, we are excited to announce that Coach Angeles, our former JV Basketball Coach since 2024, has been promoted as the Boys Basketball Varsity Head Coach. This decision of the Athletic Department comes with a vision that aligns with the St. John Paul II Mission Statement, a focus on community and the desire to take the boys basketball program to the next level.

Coach Angeles’s previous experience as the JV coach and the Director of AZ Flight Basketball will serve him well as he begins his new role.  Coach Angeles brings an exceptional blend of leadership, grassroots basketball experience, and faith-centered mentorship to the JP2 Lions basketball program. An Officer in the U.S. Army serving on both Active Duty and currently in Army Reserves with over 24 years of leadership experience, Coach Angeles has spent his career developing people on the court, in the field, and in the workforce.

“I am excited to begin my 1st year as Head Coach of the JP2 Varsity Boys Basketball Team. I'm not just here to coach basketball. I'm here to help form the next generation of men this community needs.

Mr. Steven Sanchez said, “If you know Jonas, you know that he has a high basketball IQ and a strong love for the sport of basketball, with a desire to build upon the pillar of community!  Next year, JP2 will look to continue to build upon the program’s growth, and I am happy that Coach Angeles has accepted the position of Head Basketball Coach!”

Families and friends of St. John Paul II can support the Boys Basketball Program by keeping Coach Angeles in their prayers, supporting the team and all athletic programs at St. John Paul II.
